"Game Of Thrones" Films 3rd Season In Dubrovnik

I already touched upon this topic on a previous post HERE. That was before I realized just how popular this HBO series is becoming. (I haven't watched all that much tv over the last while)  I've caught some episodes since then and I have to say it's a pretty cool series. (A lot of people may not know that parts of another medieval themed film, "Season of the Witch" featuring Nicolas Cage, was also filmed in parts of Croatia)

"Game of Thrones" is actually the most watched HBO series since "The Sopranos." This is something that Croatia, and especially the city of Dubrovnik, should be proud to be a part of. (If anyone has been reading this blog regularly, they'll realize I like all that medieval stuff, wizards, witches, wenches, knights, hot witches, princes, princesses, medieval armor, swords, dukes, nobles, sexy witches, swords, conjuring sorcerers, intrigue, witches posing in mirrors, trists, magic, spells, naked witches doing witch stuff and all that, what's not to like?) Well, they're all back and just wrapped up filming season 3 in Dubrovnik. I'm gonna have to sit down and watch every episode on dvd one of these days......

Game of Thrones season 3 production news

'Game of Thrones' cast rocks out -- EXCLUSIVE PHOTO.

Game of Thrones’ third season starts filming in just a few weeks, and HBO has (sparingly) released some details about its plans…

It’s not much, admittedly, but those of us suffering from Game of Thrones withdrawal since the season 2 finale at least should welcome the news that season 3 is due to go into production in the next couple of weeks.

HBO has announced that the show’s cast and crew will be returning to their Belfast studio home in early July, after which they’ll be packing their bags for Iceland, which stood in for Mance Rayder territory North of the Wall, as well as Croatia, and - new for season 3 – Morocco (as Dorne perhaps?).

Wrapping up filming in Dubrovnik for season 3

Show creators David Benioff and D.B Weiss will, naturally, be back as writers on the third season, joined by Bryan Cogman (Cripples, Bastards, and Broken Things; What Is Dead May Never Die), Vanessa Taylor (Garden of Bones; The Old Gods and the New), and Westeros creator George R.R. Martin (The Pointy End; Blackwater) himself.

Filming of "Game of Thrones" will definitely make more people aware of Dubrovnik/Croatia, who otherwise may never heard of either. Dubrovnik citizens are thrilled to be a part of the project.

Game of Thrones loves Dubrovnik

A Dubrovnik-based magazine recently caught up with the Game of Thrones while filmmakers were shooting an original scene that is absent from the original text.

Yes, the cast and crew of HBO's Game of Thrones traveled to Dubrovnik, Croatia where they filmed the scenes that take place on King's Landing's exterior. The little castle town is perfect for the look of the capital city in the books. The weather, the ancient walls, and even the old piers give it a most appropriate old-world look.

As noted above, Dubrovnik TV stopped in to report on the final day of filming at one of the piers and manage to stumble upon a scene that was written just for the show. The video above, which also includes an interview with the show's writers/exec producers David Benioff and D.B. Weiss, shows the cast and crew working on a couple of scenes in which Sansa, Littlefinger, and Shea meet out on a pier. There are some mild spoilers, although nothing terribly ruinous.

No such meetings are in the book, however. All the interactions between Sansa and Littlefinger at this point in the books (the first half of book 3) are in private, in the castle. Most likely, however, they didn't actually add any plot to those scenes, just moved the same or similar dialogue out into the sunlight.

As they say in the interview, the showrunners are looking for as much excuse to shoot out on the walls and piers of Dubrovnik as they can find when writing the season. As for the presence of Shea, fans of the book already understand that this is all new material, as the Shea of the books is quite different, and never actually becomes Sansa's confidant as she has in the show.

The third season of Game of Thrones, which covers the events of the first half of book three of George R. R. Martin’s epic fantasy novel series, Song of Ice and Fire, kicks off March 31, 2013 on HBO. You can find more images from the Croatian set on a couple of local websites here.
